Life

The circuit board lit up.

“We have life!” Bernie exclaimed.

“Not exactly life,” Ranj corrected.

Bernie rolled her eyes.

“Don’t be a buzzkill, Ranj,” Astrid scolded. “Can’t you see she’s having a Frankenstein moment?”

Bernie looked right into Astrid’s eyes and smiled.

Azi and Ranj shook their heads, looking at

each other.

Astrid’s phone buzzed. She wasn’t about to let anything or anyone interrupt her. It was probably just her mom. But she couldn’t resist taking a glance.

It was Ivy.

Astrid wanted to pay complete attention to the robot and everything around her. But now she needed to know what was up. She stole a moment and slipped away. She hoped it looked super casual. The truth was she would rather have not taken the call.

Astrid went outside and ducked under a tree. She called Ivy back.

Ivy was already on the offense. “What the hell did you say to Karsyn?” she barked. “He’s been super weird. He’s laying all kinds of pressure on me that he didn’t used to. I know it’s got something to do with you. With something you said.”

“What kind of pressure?” Astrid racked her brain. “Sex?” What a jerk, she thought.

“Yeah sex. What the hell do you guys talk about in Robotics anyway?”

“Uh . . .” What was Astrid supposed to say? Ivy was clearly in no mood to hear about Karsyn’s misguided ideas about sexual orientation. About Ivy.

“Well, stop it, whatever it is. Get your nose out of my business. Let me handle Karsyn my own way.”

With that, the conversation was over.

Astrid got up from the wet rock and smoothed down her clothes. She found a crumpled tissue in her pocket and ran it beneath both eyes. No point in sitting out here. She went back inside.

She found Bernie literally doing a happy dance. It was the dorkiest, cutest thing Astrid had ever seen.
